Hazardous chemical fertilizers in vegetables reported  :
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thiruvananthapuram: The presence of hazardous chemical fertilizers were detected in 15 kinds of vegetables used in our day-to-day chores like curry leaves and small onions. The fertilisers were found much higher than the preferred quantity.

The vegetables were tested at the Vellayani Agricultural University lab, a government accredited laboratory functioning in international standards. The 50 kinds of vegetables collected from various shops in Thiruvananthapuram from January to April were sent for examination. Majority of vegetables in the state were brought from other states. But indigenous vegetables are found to be safe. Consumption of these hazardous vegetables may lead to cancer.

As per the list published by the laboratory, the vegetables were classified into three categories depending on the presence of chemicals, like vegetables containing hazardous chemicals, second with slight chemical presence and third without any chemicals. The vegetable under first category are : cauliflower, cabbage (white and violet), long beans, red green leaves, red onion, amla, green chilly, coriander leaves, curry leaves, drumstick, tomato, capsicum (yellow, red), puthina leaves, ivy guard and ladies finger.

The second category, vegetables with less chemicals include bitter guard, cucumber, beans, ginger, yam, onion, sambar chilly, snake guard, tapioca, colacasia, winged bean, brinjal, potato, capsicum green, radish, banana, green peas, pumpkin, pineapple, chow chow, bottle guard, fissure guard and water melon.

The only way to get rid off chemicals is to dip the vegetables for 10 minutes in salt water or water mixed with vinegar or tamarind. Then wash many times. The long beans should be washed with a small scrubber. In this way ladies finger and bitter guard too can be cleaned with soft brush. They should be dried after washing and keep in the fridge. The examination of vegetables began jointly by agricultural university and agricultural ministry. Detailed report would be published soon, professor Dr Thomas Biju Mathew said.
