Spiritual insight is nothing but the realisation of this truth that the deepest acquisitions of the human being are not merely restricted to the body and the mind, but to something profounder, deeper and wider, though not easily visible to the ordinary eyes. There is a resplendent, transcendent and universal substratum behind all our experiences, which we have forgotten on account of our confinement to the body and the limited modes of thinking, and our freedom lies in the recognition of what we are essentially. That is why the central teaching of all philosophies both in the West as well as in the East is to know thyself – atmanam vidhi. When you know yourself truly, you have known the whole creation because the whole creation is one substance appearing as manifold, and as your body is nothing but a part of this creation, naturally to understand it would be to understand the substance out of which the whole creation is made.
Therefore, it is up to every aspiring, seeking, and intelligent individual here to seek what is true as distinguished from the false, to aspire only for the good as differentiated from the pleasant, and to live the wise life of unison with nature, regarding nature not as an opponent or an enemy but as a dear friend, not to be kicked aside as a devil but to be embraced as a loving mother and as a solacing support in every stage of our life.
It is God that appears as the universe, and therefore it is God that we see with our eyes when we wake up into the ordinary consciousness. But we are likely to regard the world as a material, changing phenomenon, not knowing that the underlying basis of the world is a spiritual unitary being. Religion is nothing but the practice of this law that the essence of existence is a spiritual entity not limited, confined or finite in any way, but universal, spiritual and immortal.
Can you conceive of anything immortal in this world? Have you seen anything infinite or eternal? These are only words to the ordinary human being. We can never conceive of any such thing here because they are not existent here, but we can infer the existence of the infinite, the eternal, the universal from the observation of the temporal, the limited and the finite. The world is in the position of an effect, and therefore it should have a cause. Naturally, you would accept that the cause should be at least as great as the effect, if not more. The world is so vast, creation is so immense; therefore the cause of this creation, of this universe, of this world should be at least as immense, as vast, as grand and magnificent as it is. But there is one special feature in this supreme effect of this cause which we call the universe: that the effect is changing in nature, while the cause is unchanging.
Now, it is not only unchanging but also spiritual, as contradistinguished from the material body and the world. You may put a question to me as to how I know it is spiritual. This again can be inferred from the fact of our own consciousness within. Does anyone regard his own personality as a mass of matter? Definitely not, because we are thinking beings, capable of knowing things, and naturally we cannot imagine that a mass of matter can think. Matter is considered to be inert and dead, and matter is in the position of a known object, not a knowing subject. Therefore we are the knowers of matter, so naturally we ourselves cannot be matter. We are intelligent beings observing the existence and operation of matter outside us. And considering the whole world as a material substance, naturally we would be observers of this world.

Jackfruits are the state fruit and are a cultural icon of Kerala. The "Jack" in Jackfruit itself is from the Malayalam word "chakka", through Portuguese "jaca".

Only 27.3% of the families in Kerala depend upon agriculture for their livelihood, which is also the least corresponding rate in India.
Kerala produces 97% of the national output of black pepper and accounts for 85% of the natural rubber in the country. Coconut, tea, coffee, cashew, and spices—including cardamom, vanilla, cinnamon, and nutmeg are the main agricultural products. Around 80% of India's export quality cashew kernels are prepared in Kollam. The key cash crop is coconut and Kerala ranks first in the area of coconut cultivation in India.Around 90% of the total Cardamom produced in India is from Kerala. India is the second-largest producer of Cardamom in world. About 20% of the total Coffee produced in India are from Kerala. The key agricultural staple is rice, with varieties grown in extensive paddy fields. Home gardens made up a significant portion of the agricultural sector.
Fisheries
With 590 kilometres (370 miles) of coastal belt, 400,000 hectares of inland water resources and approximately 220,000 active fishermen, Kerala is one of the leading producers of fish in India.[287] According to 2003–04 reports, about 11 lakh(1.1 million) people earn their livelihood from fishing and allied activities such as drying, processing, packaging, exporting and transporting fisheries. The annual yield of the sector was estimated as 6,08,000 tons in 2003–04. This contributes to about 3% of the total economy of the state. In 2006, around 22% of the total Indian marine fishery yield was from Kerala.[289] During the southwest monsoon, a suspended mud bank develops along the shore, which in turn leads to calm ocean water, peaking the output of the fishing industry. This phenomenon is locally called chakara.[290][291] The waters provide a large variety of fish: pelagic species; 59%, demersal species; 23%, crustaceans, molluscs and others for 18%.[289] Around 1050,000(1.050 million) fishermen haul an annual catch of 668,000 tonnes as of a 1999–2000 estimate; 222 fishing villages are strung along the 590-kilometre (370-mile) coast. Another 113 fishing villages dot the hinterland.

Let us, therefore, protect our natural environment. Helping in maintaining the ecological balance is our duty. It is indispensable for our safe living and highest welfare. Polluting of public places and polluting of air and water of the country is a national crime. We must make amends of our past lapses.
14. Unity: The more united the people of a country, the greater is their ability to withstand all obstacles and dangers. United we stand, divided we fall. This is particularly true about today’s India. Therefore, let us live in close harmony and loving goodwill with all our countrymen. Love of our country means love of our countrymen. Disincentives generated by successive governments in Kerala through imposing artificial barriers on the freedom of farmers and agricultural entrepreneurs have resulted in the collapse of agriculture in the state.
The state of Kerala has witnessed a significant decline in agricultural production in the last few decades. In this context, Centre for Public Policy Research (CPPR) has conducted a study: A stagnant agriculture in Kerala: The role of the state that elucidates how excessive government intervention in the form of policies and protective practices, namely, those in land, irrigation, agricultural credit system, price and procurement has created distortions in the agricultural market. This, in turn, has resulted in hampering the growth of agriculture in the state.
Land reforms that killed entrepreneurship:
The Land Reforms Act implemented in 1970 set a ceiling on the absolute size of landholdings by landlords, aimed at redistributing the surplus land among landless labourers and poor peasants. The method of implementation of land reforms in the state, however, has resulted in the fragmentation of landholdings. At present, the percentage of marginal farmers with landholding size less than one hectare is the highest in Kerala among the Indian states, while the agricultural growth here was among the least in India in 2012, according to the statistics provided by the Ministry of Agriculture, Government of India.
The imposition of a ceiling on the size of landholdings has resulted in the elimination of scope for entrepreneurship in agriculture. Land was seized from entrepreneurs, who helped in improving the production of food and non-food crops in Kerala through innovative technologies. These lands were distributed among cooperative societies, which were predominantly under political parties. This resulted in large scale corruption in farming practices, leading to a rise in the cost of operation and high cumulative losses, as well as production based on non-scientific methods by marginal farmers.
Cooperative Farming or Coercive Farming?
The Land Utilisation Order, 1967, and the Kerala Conservation of Paddy and Wetland Act, 2008, in the name of incentivising paddy farming, pressurised the farmers to carry on food crop cultivation. This was irrespective of the farming conditions and the low profitability of paddy cultivation, putting artificial constraints on the freedom of farmers.
Studies based on personal interviews with farmers indicate that there were incidents of widespread crop destruction led by powerful agricultural labour unions targeted at small and marginal farmers, while powerful farmers, who were using paddy lands for construction purposes, were left alone.
However, even after, and partly due to, such practices, area under paddy cultivation and production of rice declined significantly. At the same time, these practices created disincentives to farmers for overall cultivation, resulting in the shortage of agricultural labour. A commensurate mechanisation improvement did not take place due to different policy regulations like the Kerala Coconut Husks Control Order, 1973, and protests by trade unions against farm mechanisation, indirectly supported by the successive state governments.
Mismanaged Irrigation:
Kerala had a centralised management for the irrigation system, which was exclusive of farmers. This government-managed irrigation system was criticised for mismanagement, rent seeking and nepotism by irrigation officials and politicians. In 1985, Command Area Development Authorities (CADAs) were formed in the state to involve farmers in the management of irrigation systems. However, their aim was not achieved due to disregard of farmers’ initiatives with government orders dominating their organisations, farmers losing faith in the officials who promised regular supply of water, constant interference of politicians and the limited role of farmer organisations.
Most of the irrigation projects under CADAs were designed for the irrigation of wetland crops, mainly rice, neglecting the specific irrigation requirements of other crops. All these have resulted in very low irrigation efficiency in the state, thus hampering its agricultural growth.
No credits to agricultural credit either:
The agricultural credit market in the state has been affected by excessive government intervention, which has resulted in creating distortions in the agricultural credit system inhibiting productive capital formation in the sector. Primary Agricultural Credit Societies (PACS), aimed at providing an economical source of short- and medium-term agricultural credit to farmers in Kerala, were affected by bureaucracy and excessive government reliance. Along with these, high nonperforming assets, capital inadequacy and opposition to automation in PACS resulted in poor service of credit delivery to farmers.
According to the latest statistics, only 10.55 per cent of the total disbursement of Rs 71,301.88 crore by PACS were utilised for agriculture and only 0.21 per cent of this agricultural credit was for long-term agricultural purposes. District Cooperative Banks also gave priority to short-term credit over medium-term agricultural credit like PACS. These resulted in an increase in the share of production credit in the total agricultural credit and a significant decline in the share of investment credit, which is the main driver of private capital formation in agriculture.
The model of a centralist-planned economy was followed in Kerala with agricultural products to be sold to the government at government-determined Minimum Support Prices (MSP), and not based on market demand and supply conditions. This created price distortions in the market.
Kerala is reported to be the state with a steep rise in the government procurement of rice, of around 48 per cent in the last few years, while there has been a significant decline in the production of rice with a negative growth rate in this period, with lower availability of rice in the open market. Excessive government intervention in the marketing mechanisms in agriculture, namely, restricting marketing through cooperative societies, created artificial constraints on farmers, thus disincentivising them and ultimately leading to the collapse of agriculture in the state.

The study thus shows that disincentives generated by the successive governments in Kerala through imposing artificial barriers on the freedom of farmers and agricultural entrepreneurs have resulted in the collapse of agriculture in the state. The interests of farmers and market conditions were not considered while framing the policies and practices.
