Prof. Swaminathan boasts a long and distinguished career.

He served as Director of the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (1961-72),

Director General of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research,

Secretary to the Government of India’s Department of Agricultural Research and Education (1972-79),

Principal Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture (1979-80),

Acting Deputy Chairman and later Member (Science and Agriculture),

Planning Commission (1980-82),

and Director General of the International Rice Research Institute (1982-88).





He was President of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (1984-90),

President of the World Wide Fund for Nature (India) from 1989-96,

President of the Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs (2002-07),

President of the National Academy of Agricultural Sciences (1991-96 and 2005-07),

and a trustee of Bibliotheca Alexandrina in its formative years.

The greatest Bhakta is—not one who goes on rolling the beads, with selfishness, lust, anger and greed enshrined in his heart but—one who is endowed with all auspicious qualities, and who is devoted to the welfare of humanity. Lord Krishna does not define Jnana as scriptural erudition or an intellectual appreciation of philosophic truths or the capacity and cleverness to string words together and to indulge in vain debating. He defines Jnana as the sum total of the best of virtues. Read the thirteenth Chapter of the Bhagavadgita, you will understand this clearly. The Lord says: watch for these qualities in a man. In 1949, opening a cupboard, the Master’s attendant found a bedsheet bitten by a rat, and inside the sheet were four of its newborns. They had hardly opened their eyes. He took them to the Master. When the Master saw the baby rats, his heart was flooded with compassion. He felt greatly pained that they should have been disturbed. He asked the attendant to put them back immediately in the same place and condition, lest their mother should miss them. This was done. But in a day or two, the mother rat got killed by a cat. Soon after, the little ones also died. When the Master saw the dead rats, he felt sad and did Maha Mantra Kirtan for a pretty long time for the peace of the departed souls. His attendant also joined him in the Kirtan. The Master fed ants with sugar, birds with rice, monkeys with gram, fish with bread. He kept water in pots for birds.
